What is NB Municipality Week?

NB Municipality Week is an annual opportunity to recognize and celebrate the important role local governments play in building strong, connected, and vibrant communities. Throughout the week, municipalities across New Brunswick share information about local government and highlight the people, services, and decisions that help keep our communities running.

What is Local Government?

Local government is the level of government closest to home. It is responsible for many of the services, spaces, and programs that residents rely on every day, including roads, recreation facilities, parks, fire protection, community planning, and more.

Your Mayor and Council are elected by the community to make decisions on local priorities, set budgets, and help shape the future of the municipality. Supported by municipal staff and community volunteers, they help maintain services, invest in infrastructure, and create opportunities that enhance quality of life for residents.

While much of municipal government happens behind the scenes, its impact can be seen every day in the places we gather, the services we use, and the communities we call home.

Fun Fact: Municipal government is often referred to as the level of government closest to the people because its decisions impact daily life, from the roads we travel to the parks and facilities we enjoy.
